Hi all! I was in Victoria (BC, Canada) recently, and what better way of talking about my stay there than writing our first review? I was only there for a couple days, and ate some good food, some not-so-good food, and was all-around pretty content with my experience.

Anyhow, I know we mostly focus on locations in Seattle, but The Noodle Box was worthy of praise. I went to the Douglas Street location, which was near the hotel I stayed at. The Fisgard street location is in Victoria’s Chinatown. You can check out their website to see a discription of their menu, it isn’t very long and complicated, but they cover a wide variety of foodstyles. It was a little surprising to see their “spiciness” level ranging over several levels with the levels being something like “mild” [note: I can’t remember all the level names] to “medium-hot” and “hot” and “Xtra hot” and even “XXX hot,” finally ending at “suicide hot.” In Seattle everything ranges from 1 to 5, with 1 being the least spicy and 5 being the most spicy.

Being a fan of green curry, I ordered their Thai Green Curry (available in rice, although I got rice noodles) and picked a spiciness level of Xtra hot. It was a pure estimate of my tolerable level of spiciness (considering that I usually get 4; 4.5 if I’m feeling confident; 5 if I am in serious need of clearing out my sinuses), and I guess it worked well for me because it came out perfect. The blend of soothing green curry and spicy chili did a jig on my toungue, and I loved it.

I tried it again a day or so later, and had the Cambodian Jungle Curry instead, again with rice noodles and with Xtra hot. It ended up having a lot more spicy chili in the dish already without the added spiciness level, and was too hot for me to stomach. I wouldn’t have minded the spiciness level, but the dish itself wasn’t all that great-tasting so it was kind of a let-down after I’d had the Thai Green Curry only days before. For me, the green curry flavor blended well with the noodles, while the Cambodian Jungle Curry seemed like it was only spicy, no flavor. It was downright boring compared to the Thai Green Curry. If possible, I’d like to try some other dishes from them, but I liked the Thai Green Curry so much that I’d be hard-pressed not to order it again.

It should be noted, that this restaurant is called “The Noodle Box.” Well, what’s also interesting, is that the place serves everything in a little takeaway box, regardless if you’re really going take-out or if you’re dining in. It’s cute, it’s unique, and it’s definitely worth a visit whenever you’re in Victoria.

Here’s a recipe I’ve gotten a lot of compliments for! It’s really simple and is very delicious. I hope you enjoy it too!

((Apologies to any vegetarians, this a completely meat dish.))

Ingredients:
Pork ribs
1 part cooking/rice wine
2 parts black vinegar
3 parts sugar
4 parts soy sauce
5 parts water

The actual amount you add in isn’t important; it’s the proportion of each ingredient that matters. Normally, a tablespoon is a good measurement for each ingredient… you’re looking to have it at least cover most of the meat (not cover it completely!). It all depends on the amount of meat you’re putting in.

Add all the ingredients into a pot with some slices of garlic and ginger. Let it come to a simmer so all the sugar is dissolved, then add in the pork ribs. After it boils, turn the heat down a little lower and let it simmer at a slow heat until most of the liquid is gone. All you have to do is let it cook and stir occasionally so they don’t burn. It should be juicy, lovely, and tender!

Also, depending on what kind of taste you prefer your ribs to have, you can add a little more of anything than the actual recipe calls for. For example, you can add chilli powder along with the other ingredients (before adding in the pork ribs) if you want it to be somewhat spicy. I’ve also tried putting in some strips of green onions after it was done for extra flavoring.

Simple and delicious; those are the best kind of recipes. ^_^

Also, Shio and I experiment with recipes a lot, and I was thinking of putting some of my better ones up. Do you think that’d be something you’d like to see?

You’ll see there are some restaurant, bubble tea, and karaoke place addresses on the left, be sure to check them out if you’re in the Seattle area!

Any C&C welcome~~!!

We’ll review some bubble tea places too. Ooh, and I’ll post my own SakuraCon experience later~~

Much luv,
Satori

P.S. Don’t mind Shiori’s last post, she was locked up in a steel cage for a couple hours one day so her post is a little… um, random. ^^;

Hooray!! Satori, Bianca and I made it to SakuraCon this year!

Minute 001. Standing in line. We thought we’d get through pretty fast, but then some manatee of a woman jumped out in front of us and asked us if we were 18. Five minutes later she announced that we were going to have to cough up 50 bucks for full weekend entry, since they’d ran out of Saturday Only badges. ((Inner Shio: WTF?!?!?!)) It took us at least FOUR hours to get into the darn con.

Bianca was well-admired for her Gothic Lolita cosplay look, but I think she was a little confused by that, since she was only wearing her normal everyday clothes… They were also very curious to know where she got her “white wig” and “red contacts” from, because apparently no one realized that she is a true albino! Funny enough, people kept asking Bianca if she were so-and-so from such-and-such an anime. Like some singer from Chrono Crusade? She also saw some albino action figure that looked exactly like her, which weirded her out. A lot of people at the con started randomly taking pictures of her, which got frustrating after a while. Bianca was definitely more than a little grateful when I helped dispersed the crowd.

((Inner Shio: As for the action figure, don’t tell Bianca, but I bought it to give it to her for Christmas… Heh heh heh… ;))

The art was interesting to look at, I am seriously considering printing a bunch of my drawings tonight and trying to sell them tomorrow. Hehehe.

I feel a little sorry for Andy (of “Seconds, Please”) because he drove us to the Con but wasn’t willing to pay the extra $20 it’d cost for a full weekend pass. So he accompanied us to the door and then took off. Thanks for the ride, Andy! Sorry you missed out!
